A Dream Becomes A Reality
HART had dreamed for years of buying an Adoption Van to be used for mobile adoptions and as an emergency shelter evacuation vehicle. Our dream become a reality when we purchased a used big box van and hired a local contractor to customize it for us. Since our purchase we have found many uses for the van.
It's one more way HART is just a little different than your average shelter - perhaps only one or two other shelters in the entire state have a van equipped like ours. It's designed specifically for transporting animals and processing adoptions. After retrofitting our van with 14 custom fitted cages (each with their own separate litter box area & sunning shelves), installing windows on the sides for ventilation and light, a generator & sink, 2 desk areas, built-in storage cabinets and drawers plus overheard storage for carriers and supplies, we set out into the surrounding communities to "bring our cats to the people." With as many as 40 cats at a time comfortably housed, we have gone to PetSmart, Lemos Pet & Feed and Cayucos to showcase our cats and have had many happy adoptions!
In 2010 HART joined SLOVOAD (San Luis Obispo Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) to offer our vehicle as a small animal emergency evacuation vehicle when disaster strikes. Our participation in SLOVOAD has increased awareness of HART, its mission to rescue and adopt out homeless animals and has moved HART into community partnership with other organizations working in coordination with government first responders to provide vital assistance during a disaster.

Our van is not yet finished. We need graphics for the outside of the van so that our cats will be readily visible to adopters. We do not currently have any identifying information on the exterior of the van. Donations for operating, maintenance and insurance costs are also much appreciated.
